CCNZ members grant Executive Council decision-making powers on Margan House

25 Nov 2021

A special General Meeting of Civil Contractors New Zealand was held on 25 November 2021.

Resolutions proposed by the Executive Council considered the future of CCNZ National Office Margan House, which is situated at 21 Fitzherbert Terrace in Thorndon.

Repair work is needed, and the Executive Council has spent a significant amount of time considering the options of repair, redevelopment or sale of the property and reinvestment of the money obtained in generating value for members. The CCNZ Executive Council called the SGM to advise members of the situation and seek approval to make decisions on the future of Margan House including the possible sale, if that is deemed the most appropriate course of action.

Margan House was purchased in 1964 by CCNZ predecessor organisation, the Contractors Federation. The building was named after the third President of the Contractors Federation and Life Member Noel 'Baldy' Margan and his wife June Margan, also a Life Member,  who played a significant role in its purchase as the headquarters of the Federation.

The Executive Council noted that at this stage the preferred option is to sell the property and purchase suitable alternative premises and retain the name 'Margan' at a new location.

Members attending the SGM passed the following resolutions:
1. That the membership of CCNZ note the current position regarding Margan House

- Motion carried

2. That the membership of CCNZ note that the management of CCNZ is vested in the Executive Council as per Rule 5 of the CCNZ Constitution.

- Motion carried

3. That the Executive Council be given the mandate to sell Margan House if appropriate.

- Motion carried

4. That the passing of resolution 3 satisfies the requirements of a 2000 AGM resolution*.

- Motion carried

5. That the Executive Council note that the strong preference of members present at the SGM is that should the sale of Margan House occur then the proceeds of the sale should, as necessary, be used to purchase suitable alternative premises.

          - Motion carried

The CCNZ Executive Council will now progress the plans for Margan House and will keep the members informed. CCNZ President Tony Pike thanked the membership for the trust vested in the Executive Council to achieve the best result for Civil Contractors New Zealand.

* note -  the 2000 AGM Resolution stated that if the Executive Council was ever to consider selling Margan House, the membership must be consulted before any action was taken, worded that "if the Executive Council ever considered that Margan House should be sold, a vote of the membership should be conducted before any action is taken"
