Protecting Vulnerable Road Users in TTM Environments
A total of 1,052 people were seriously injured, sometimes fatally, on or around New Zealand's temporary traffic management work sites between 2001 and 2021. This number includes 104 vulnerable road users.
One of these people, a cyclist, was fatally injured in 2019, following a collision with a concrete truck on a road work site. Civil Contractors New Zealand has since worked to support the members involved to review the temporary traffic management settings around managing the risk to vulnerable road users around TTM work sites.
As a result, we have published a safety alert on protecting vulnerable road users around work sites as part of the enforceable undertaking following the incident, along with a Practice Note developed to assist clients, contractors and designers in protecting vulnerable road users around TTM sites.
This Practice Note explores the protection of vulnerable road users in TTM environments. It is published in seven parts for different audiences, ranging from the general public and road controlling authorities, to contractors, designers, and field staff.
