In Memory of Ray Hanna
We are saddened to share the passing of Ray Hanna, a respected and long-standing figure in the Canterbury civil construction industry and Branch Life Member of CCNZ Canterbury Westland Branch.
Ray began his career with British Pavements, where his strong background in accountancy and business quickly saw him rise to a senior management position. Known for his disciplined and principled approach, Ray was a man who believed in doing things the right way and wasn’t afraid to stand his ground when it mattered.
Following the acquisition of British Pavements by Fulton Hogan in the 1980s, Ray briefly took on the role of Regional Manager during the transition. Though the changing business landscape signalled the final chapter of his working life, Ray remained deeply engaged with the industry long after retirement.
He had a deep passion for contracting and a special dedication to the Contractors Federation. Ray was the driving force behind Contract ’85 and ’87 held at McLeans Island, chairing the organising committee and helping deliver landmark events that brought together contractors, machinery, and innovation from across the region.
Even in retirement, Ray’s interest in the industry never faded. He kept a close eye on Fulton Hogan’s developments and loved sharing updates from the Contractor magazine and industry news with friends and former colleagues.
Ray will be fondly remembered for his integrity, dedication, and sharp mind—right to the very end. His legacy lives on in the many lives and projects he influenced.
Our thoughts are with Ray’s family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
