Otago awards recognise region's pinnacle achievements

06 Apr 2023

The 2023 CCNZ Otago Hynds Construction Awards took place on Friday 31 March at the Skyline Queenstown Stratosfare Restaurant and Bar, with the pinnacle achievements of the region's contractors celebrated in an amazing scenic location.

Around 300 attended the event. CCNZ Otago Branch Secretary Anna Pawsey said it had been a 'brilliant event'.

"We've had nothing but praise and everyone had a really good time.

"It was an amazing location, one of the best in New Zealand. The MC was brilliant as well. His name was Simon McKinney, and he's a comedian from Dunedin. He kept the flow going, and we had lots of happy people."

CCNZ Otago Branch Chair Scott Shaw said celebrating success was one of his favourite parts of his role.

"This was another fantastic evening hosted by the CCNZ Otago Branch. Congratulations to the many winners, outstanding projects on display and outstanding individuals who put themselves forward for awards."

This year's Hynds Supreme Award went to Isaac Construction, which also won the Marley Category C Award for the Malvern Street Sewer Replacement in Dunedin. Laid in the 1940’s upstream of a natural weir and downstream of an existing Heritage Listed bridge, the sewer needed replacing due to erosion of the riverbank, exposing the cast iron sewer, which was then struck by boulders causing discharge of effluent into the Water of Leith.

The scope of the project was to implement a permanent repair to the existing sewer and future proof the site from further environmental impacts.

This project provided protection to the sewer, and extended its life in an environmentally friendly, pragmatic and cost-effective way. For example, it was investigated and recognised that CIPP lining of the sewer pipe was still able to meet the projected demand for the area without the significant expense and construction-related risk associated with complete replacement. Furthermore, strategic investment in erosion protection structures and the addition of a concrete apron to protect the cast iron sewer pipe from boulder impact when the river is in flood has secured the pipeline for the foreseeable future.

SouthRoads won the Cirtex Environmental Award for its work on the Te Rauone Beach Groyne Construction for Port Otago, which saw the construction of three rock groynes, running perpendicular to the beach. Each of the engineered groynes extends up to 90 metres from the shore out into the harbour, and required about 15,000 tonnes of rock in total to construct, protecting the sand dunes and restoring the beach for people to enjoy.

KB Contractors won the Total Energies Category A Award with a power upgrade for Wakari Hospital, Fulton Hogan won the GPIL Category B Award with its Deep Stream Water Feed Remediation project. HEB Construction took out the large project category Hirepool Category D Award with a project to construct a new Wastewater Pump Station at the Tāhuna Queenstown Recreation Ground and upgrade the rising main for Queenstown Lakes District Council.

The new pump station at the Recreation Ground will provide emergency storage, additional pumping capacity and a new rising main (pipeline) for wastewater across town. This will provide more resilience to our wastewater network in Queenstown and reduce the likelihood of uncontrolled flows of wastewater into Lake Whakatipu.

This year's Connexis Young Contractor of the Year Award went to Michelle Bong from Fulton Hogan, while the Hynds Women in Contracting Award went to Amanda Dennis from HEB Construction
