CCNZ Awards celebrated the best of Waikato's civil industry

21 Jul 2022

The branch recently celebrated its members’ success with the CCNZ Waikato Hynds Construction Awards 2022. This year’s entries made for a fierce competition and saw some of the best civil construction projects in the region battling it out for the top spot in each category.

The event which was held on the 1st of July at the Claudelands Event Centre in Hamilton and was a huge success. We saw a record 270 people attended the function, including Hynds Director Aaron Hynds and Hamilton Mayor, Paula Southgate.

CB Civil, our biggest winners for the evening took home three Awards. Category Four (projects over $20 million), Health and Safety and the awards most desired title, Supreme Winner for the Peacoke Strategic Wastewater project in Hamilton. The accolades received from the client, consultants, subcontractors, suppliers and community speak for themselves and have set a new benchmark for other contractors to strive for.

Category 3 (projects between $5 - $20 million) was picked up by Brian Perry Civil Ltd for the Parallel Road Water Treatment Plant design and construct project in Cambridge that was delivered to a tight time frame despite the initial Covid 19 lockdown. Brian Perry Civil also picked up this year’s award for Engineer of the Year which went to Natasha Jokhan, who looks after the assessment, design and execution of complex temporary works. Apprentice of the Year, award which went to Jonathon (Paddy) Raureti. It was a double celebration for Paddy who couldn’t be there to receive the award in person, Paddy was at hospital with his partner awaiting the birth of their 5th child. After a long wait they welcomed the safe arrival of their daughter.

Category 2 (projects between $1 - $5 million) went to Downers for the SH21 Underpass project in Hamilton. Written endorsements from NZTA, Business and Community acknowledging quality of Downers construction of this underpass provides proof of stakeholders satisfaction with the project.

Category 1B (projects under $1 million) was awarded to two contractors this year.
Phoenix Civil Ltd for the Lake Okareka Pipeline Upgrade. Despite the challenging work environment and risks that were raised during the execution of these works, the construction team worked through these issues in a collaborative way and applied innovative solutions which ultimately delivered the project on time and within budget to the satisfaction of their client and stakeholders.
Heb Construction for the Ulster Street Outfall Erosion Remediation work. Client, Consultant and subcontractors all participated in the delivery of a successful project that the client rated under HCC's Customer Satisfaction Report rated the project as 10/10.

The recipient of the Outstanding Individual award went to Ganesh Ramar from Higgins Contractors Ltd. Nothing in life comes easy, despite having moved to NZ as a newly graduated Engineer, Ganesh was determined to be a leader and so began his journey as a L1 STMS/Traffic Controller.  He was passionate enough to start at the bottom and work his way up.  He doesn’t lament about his fact, but rather respects it. He perceives his journey as worth the hard work it took for him to get it.

A huge thank you to Fiona Woodcock who planned and executed this year’s awards dinner, it was her final year organising the event and it certainly was an outstanding and very successful evening.

There were many impressive entries this year, the judge’s positive feedback regarding the quality of submissions and level of competition was very strong. Congratulations to all this year’s worthy winners, some truly exceptional projects that portray the quality and magnitude of work that our industry delivers each and every day. Thank you to all our loyal sponsors, this event would not happen without your support, and everyone for their continued commitment to the industry.
