Otago Award winners named for 2020

The award winners from the Civil Contractors New Zealand Otago Branch Hynds Construction Awards 2020 were named on Friday 17 July at a function for the award finalists held at Village Green in Sunnyvale.

The function went ahead despite difficulties and uncertainty created by COVID-19. Although only finalists could attend this invite-only event, CCNZ Otago Branch Secretary Raewyn Murray said she was pleased the branch had been able to recognise the standout achievements of civil contractors working in the Otago region.

Downer New Zealand was the big winner on the night, taking home awards in three of the four project categories, as well as a win for young Civil Engineer Jordan Lloyd, who was recognised with the Hirepool Young Contractor of the Year Award.

Downer Otago Regional Manager Anthony van de Water witnessed all the action.

‘This is fantastic recognition for these teams and a real show of their strength and capability,' he said.

Civil Construction Ltd was recognised with the Geofabrics Environmental Award for its North Lake Bulk Earthworks project, while Fulton Hogan took home the large project award for its work on the Peninsula Connection project for Dunedin City Council.

Fulton Hogan Project Manager Winston Smith says, “The Peninsula Connection, SP8 was a special project for me. It was one that everyone in the community ‘wanted to happen’, as they had been waiting so long for funding. On day one, the local policeman said it will ‘bring the community together’, and it sure did.

“People can now safely walk or bike along the waterfront, away from the traffic.”
