CCNZ Auckland Branch recently ran 'sharing the good stuff', a competition where members were invited to share good health and safety outcomes that could benefit the wider industry. Winners were selected from those who entered, with a BBQ breakfast or lunch coming their way.

Thank you to all of those who shared their great ideas, innovations, and successes about how you have improved health, safety or wellbeing on your jobs or in your company.  It has been fantastic to see all the "good stuff" that is happening across our branch.  Keep them coming!

Congratulations and thank you to the following companies for sharing their stories with us:

DRILL RITE NZ LTD: Working with Fergus (CRM / job scheduling software) to utilise their custom forms to mirror all Sitesafe templates. Enabled achievement of green sitewise pre qual, reduced paperwork, reduced downtime, and increased productivity and communication within the company. Made it easier for staff and clients to use one set of documents at all sites.

PIRITAHI: Piritahi are in their 2nd year of a "team walking challenge" using the Tracksuit App. Last year it was mostly office workers who were involved, however this year our site teams are engaged and competing for prizes too! Positive chat is up all around Piritahi sites and head office, with the leader board creating fierce competition for all those participating in the month long event.

PIPELINE AND CIVIL: Steve Houpapa (site supervisor) has been focused on creating a support and inclusive environment for his team. This has resulted in a site where everyone's roles and responsibilities are clearly defined making for a more productive site.

GeoStabilization New Zealand Ltd: SWMS were amended onsite to relay onsite hazards. Crew onsite took ownership of safety and implemented ways to reduce risk of collisions.

VITA CIVIL LIMITED: Visitors to site were asked to leave site because they did not have required PPE.

PIPELINE AND CIVIL: Mairangi Bay Pump Station team carried out a risk workshop to ensure hierarchy of controls were put in place correctly for the installation of the roof beams.

WATERCARE SERVICE LTD: Established a joint group including contractors at a leadership and frontline workers level. Outcome has been more open communication, good ideas and recommendations coming through from the group.

PIPELINE AND CIVIL: Technical Services divisions teams have carried out a significant amount of emergency works since the flooding and cyclone damage within Auckland. Regardless of the challenges they were faced with, no short cuts were taken and work was safe and completed to normal high quality.

GeoStabilization New Zealand Ltd: Road Safety at SH1 Brynderwyn

Emergency works were required on SH1 along the Brynderwyn Hills, cutting off Northland from the rest of the country.  Roads were opened to one lane while stabilisation of the affected slips and underslips were still taking place.

GSI crew had to use a Hiab crane to do the shotcrete works due to the small work corridor.  The Hiab crane was able to make the most of the single lane closure meaning that traffic could be kept flowing up the road to Whangarei during the shotcrete activities.

This initiative meant that safety was not compromised and traffic was not overly affected with a full road closure.  The hard barrier between the dead lane and the live lane meant that plant and people were fully excluded from the live traffic throughout the whole of this construction period.

Pipeline and Civil: Mairangi Bay Pump Station

A risk workshop was carried out to ensure hierarch of controls were put in place correctly (elimination down to minimisation).  Critical risk management was also established within the planning stages so that the coordination of delivery, cranage, residents, parking, lift and no-go zones were all accounted for prior to the installation.

Carrying out a critical risk management plan meant less disruption to the public and local residents living next to the site.  As it is a working at height site, the main impact was that a safe and quality job was able to be executed.

Vita Civil: Making tough calls to keep the site safe

Vita Civil have clear expectations about what is required by visitors on site.  Sometimes implementing these expectations can mean having a difficult conversation - this is exactly what Vita Civil did.  Recently when visitors (including a Company Director) to site did not have the required PPE they were asked to leave the site.

As Vita Civil noted, not all sites have the same requirements, it is up to each site to ensure their expectations are met and to ensure that visitors understand the site specific requirements so that the job site remains safe for everyone.
