The McConnell Dowell_HEB Construction Joint Venture (JV) is proud to be delivering the transformational Wellington Sludge Minimisation Facility (WSMF), also known by its gifted name of Te Whare Wai Para Nuku —a critical infrastructure project that will significantly reduce the environmental impact of sludge management in Wellington and support the city’s ambitious carbon reduction goals. The WSMF will reduce the volume of sludge sent to landfill by approximately 80%, helping Wellington take a major step toward the goal of achieving net carbon zero by 2050. The WSMF project continues the long standing McConnel Dowell – HEB joint venture, which has spanned more than a decade, constructing some of the largest and most complex water infrastructure projects across New Zealand. This project draws on many global suppliers and expertise to provide a truly world class facility for Wellington. At the centre of this facility is the CAMBI system, a thermal hydrolysis process, that improves digestion of wastewater sludges to greatly reduce volumes and create cleaner more accessible biogas. This biogas is used to heat steam and hot water as well as providing power for the facility. The end granulated product is inert which provides an opportunity to be used as, for example, a soil conditioner.
