Aaron Mauger is a born and bred Cantabrian and proud New Zealander of European heritage with Pacific Island bloodlines that trace through Tahiti, Rurutu, the Cook Islands and Samoa. He is married to Amy and together they have four children — Felix (21), Zoe (19), Ivy (14) and Hugo (12).

Aaron has over 27 years of experience in professional rugby. As a player he represented Canterbury, the Crusaders and Leicester Tigers (UK) at provincial and franchise level. Across these teams he was part of multiple championship-winning sides, making a significant impact as both a player and leader while gaining deep insight into what it takes to build successful teams and high-performance environments.

Aaron also earned the honour of wearing the All Blacks jersey on 46 occasions between 2001–2007, working alongside some of the most respected coaches and players in New Zealand rugby.

Following his playing career, Aaron transitioned into coaching, beginning at club level in Christchurch before earning assistant coaching roles with Canterbury and the Crusaders. He later became Head Coach of Leicester Tigers and the Highlanders, and was appointed the inaugural Head Coach of Moana Pasifika, guiding the franchise through its formative years and entry into Super Rugby in 2022–2023.

In 2023 Aaron returned to Christchurch with his family and founded Black12 Team & Leadership Performance Coaching, supporting senior leaders, executive teams, sports organisations and schools to build environments where people can flourish individually and collectively. Aaron sees the opportunity to share his leadership experiences and help others grow as a genuine privilege.

Today Aaron balances his work with Black12 alongside his role as an Assistant Coach with the Fijian National Rugby Team, while also supporting his wife Amy with their family restaurant and bar, Dux Dine.

Aaron also has a strong commitment to community and creating opportunities for others, previously serving on the boards of Tamai Sports and Etu Pasifika Canterbury.
